2016 – Urban Heritage in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
“Today all sounds belong to a continuous field of possibilities lying within the comprehensive dominion of music. Behold the new orchestra: the sonic universe! And the musicians: anyone and anything that sounds!”
R. Murray Schafer, The Soundscape (1993)
Recording everyday moments of life in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar was for me an auditory snippet into Swahili culture. Whether we are hearing ordinary sounds, or voluntary sounds like music –the noises and productions of a street, a temple, a garden or a beach tell us something different about that place.
A selection of sounds are featured on the wonderful Radio Aporee.
